The average age of cars and light trucks in the United States has risen to a new record of 12.6 years in 2024. As the age of cars increases, so too does the need for techs.

Nearly 800,000 new automotive, diesel, collision repair, aviation and avionics technicians will be needed to keep pace with demand.

Many techs start by earning an automotive technology certificate or diploma at a vocational school or technical college. Programs typically take 2 years to complete – sometimes even less depending on the area of interest.

Automotive technicians who attain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification typically have better job prospects, more opportunities for career growth and earn higher wages.

There’s no such thing as a “typical” vo-tech student. The backgrounds and interests of tomorrow’s technicians are as varied as the jobs you all hope to fill. But it’s safe to say you have at least one thing in common with your future classmates…and that’s a love for this stuff. For fixing things. For tinkering. For figuring things out. And that’s all that’s needed to begin your journey. You may not have experience, or know exactly what you want to do. But if you have the passion – and the drive to pursue it– then you’re way ahead of the game.
Starting in 2025, we’ll be featuring videos of current students to give you a sense of a typical day. Hear about what life is like in class and in the shop. And some tips for making the most of your experience.

Ask any vo-tech instructor why they got into teaching and they’re all going to give you a slightly different version of the same answer, “Because there’s nothing better than seeing a student ‘get it’.” A lot of that stems from how much time is spent with students. Sure, there’s certainly a fair amount of classroom work, but it’s the one-on-one time in the shop that builds that bond – the desire to see it all come together for students. “Get it” means more than simply helping you understand how to do something, but rather helping you realize that your passion can become your living. To see a future that’s both realistic and attainable. And if you ask us, that’s pretty darn cool.

And to save the suspense, they ALL began where you’ll begin your career….in school. Not everyone had it all figured out at a young age. And rarely was the path as simple as A to B. But you’ll learn that if you can see yourself putting in the work, you can also see yourself in their shoes one day.
